Some facts on Euro 2024

  1. The first Euros was held in 1960 and comprised of 4 teams, it has been held every 4 years since and now has 24 teams who qualify for the ‘finals’ having come through a qualification process against other European nations.
  2. The total prize money for teams participating in the 2024 event is €331million (compared to €409million in prize pot for the 2022 world cup)
  3. In Euro 2020 Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) became the first player to appear at five different Euro championships, and he’ll appear in this one to extend his record to 6.
  4. Cristiano Ronaldo has also scored more goals in Euro finals than any other player (14 goals). 2nd is Michel Platini (France) with 9 goals and joint 3rd are Antoine Griezmann (France) and Alan Shearer (England) both with 7 goals
  5. Michel Platini (France) has the most goals in a single tournament, as all his 9 goals came in the 1984 tournament that France won.
  6. Germany and Spain hold the record for the most tournament wins with 3 each (Germany 1972, 1980, 1996, Spain 1964, 2008, 2012).
  7. The Euros has had some ‘shock’ winners over the years, including Czechoslovakia 1976, Denmark 1992 and Greece 2004 (we’ll add Scotland 2024 into this list on 14th July).
  8. Scotland have qualified for the Euro finals 4 times (1992, 1996, 2020 and 2024)
  9. England have qualified for the Euro finals 10 times (1968, 1980, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012, 2016, 2020), reaching the semi finals in 1996 and final in 2020.
  10. Euro 2020 had 5.2 billion viewers for the tournament, with the final alone getting 328 million viewers. across 229 territories and 137 broadcasters.
